Club History

On December 9,1967 an interested group of parents founded the Niagara
District Skating Club.  The club was formed in order to give children and
adults in the area an opportunity to advance their skating by learning the art
of Figure Skating.  The Club began in connection with the opening of the
new Niagara District Centennial arena in Virgil.  The first skating day was
March 22, 1967 and over 70 skaters were registered and began the
tradition that continues to this day.

On October 30, 1968 the Niagara District Figure Skating Club was granted
club membership in the Canadian Figure Skating Association. This
allowed the Club to hold test days and sanctioned carnivals.  Mr Frank
Mandeville, a local high school teacher with a passion for figure skating,
became the Club's first President and involved his family right from the
beginning.  His wife played the music and his son helped coach the
younger skaters.  On January 1, 1979 the Club was incorporated and the
name was changed to the Niagara-on-the-Lake Figure Skating Club.  On
April 19, 2001 at the Annual General Meeting, the name again changed to
the Niagara-on-the-Lake Skating Club.

Over the years, the Club has gone through many changes.  Without the
amazingly dedicated volunteers and coaches, our Club would not be the
success it is today.  The skaters themselves dedicate many hours helping
our Pre-School and CanSkate children.  We have had many successful
skaters over the years that have represented the former Western Ontario
Section and now Skate Ontario Section at the Provincial Level and
National Level.   Many of our skaters have proudly represented the Club in
Invitational Competitions as well.  A significant number of our skaters have
also achieved their Gold and Diamond test levels.

One of our greatest achievements as a Club is our dedicated coaches,
board members, volunteers and parents.  Their love of the sport and
commitment have made the club the success it is today. Most importantly,
skaters young and young-at-heart are encouraged to have fun and do their
